The July/August 2023 Issue of Civil Engineering, a Magazine by the American Society of Civil Engineers, Features Level Studios Electric Oasis

Electric Oasis is a far-future charging station concept that would provide electric vehicle charging, programming activities, economic revitalization, and ground remediation in a single package. The design leverages steel to combine canopies, pathways, and resiliency hubs into a multifunctional destination that puts people — and leisure activities — first.

The design, created by the New York City- and Los Angeles-based Level Studio, won the American Institute of Steel Construction’s 2023 Forge Prize, which honors “emerging architects who create visionary designs that embrace steel as the primary structural component while exploring ways to increase project speed,” according to AISC.

Level Studio successfully presented a concept called Electric Oasis that inserts “treelike” steel canopies into gas stations while simultaneously enacting a bio-remediative aeration system that helps to mitigate the ground soil contamination that ordinarily renders such sites unusable for generations.

Student Life Features Level Studio’s Surface to Sukkah Project

St. Louis Hillel’s Sukkah City 2014 has built a home on the lawn in front of the Women’s Building.

Sukkah City’s 10 sukkahs were constructed as part of a competition marking the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, during which observers eat meals in outdoor shelters. The weeklong holiday began on Wednesday evening at sundown and concludes Oct. 15.

Ten cutting-edge sukkahs by architects and designers from around the nation will be installed Oct. 7-12 on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis.

The projects are winners of “Sukkah City STL 2014: Between Absence and Presence,” an ambitious contemporary design competition presented by St. Louis Hillel and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts.

Urban Timber: From Seed To City Exhibit Promoted by Judge, Nader Tehrani of NADAAA

A final opportunity to view Urban Timber, in what is the final week of the exhibition at the BSA Space. Curated and organized by Yugon Kim, the exhibit was the result of a competition, resulting in dozens of submissions. Targeting innovative ways of building with wood, the agenda of the competition was to assemble four design teams to develop their proposal with the guidance of architectural mentors —Alan Organschi, Alex Anmahian, Andrew Waugh, and me, Nader Tehrani– towards full scale mock-ups that demonstrate through making. With the four projects, also an expansive overview of the uses of wood in history, new means and methods developed in recent times and the range of products that are the result of the wood industry. New England was built with timber. Were it not for the Great Fire of Boston in 1872, the urban landscape of glass, steel, and concrete that we know today might have been very different.

Level Studio’s M2X3, Winning Submission for TIMBER New England Design + Fabrication Competition, Featured on Archinect

The winners for the TIMBER New England Design + Fabrication competition were recently announced on TIMBER's website. Entrants had to propose a site specific installation inspired by traditional New England building and crafting, using engineered lumber or heavy timber. Each winning team will be paired with an architectural firm, a structural engineer, and a material supplier—and $7,500—to have their proposals realized at the URBAN TIMBER exhibit at BSA Space, opening in February 2014.

"M2X3 is derived from the Roman numeral marriage marks scribed in corresponding pieces of lumber centuries ago during traditional New England timber-frame assembly. MMXXX (2030) is the year the world’s population will shift to majority urban dwellers. Recognizing New England’s traditional wood-building vernacular while exploring the potential of contemporary engineered lumber, M2X3 seeks to craft a new tectonic system of wood joinery for application in urban midrise construction."
